Gijs Frieling

Gijs Frieling (Amsterdam, 1966) was educated at the Rietveld academie (1986-1991) and the Rijksakademie (1994-1996), both in Amsterdam, He won the Royal prize for painting in 1994, the Prix de Rome in 1999 and the Cobra art prize in 2009. From 2006 – 2010 he was director and chief curator of the W139 art space in Amsterdam. Currently he works as the art advisor of the Office of the Dutch Chief Government Architect. He is a supervisory board member of the Mondrian Fund, and a member of the jury for the Dutch Royal prize for painting.
« I make temporary and permanent murals in private homes, museums, galeries, institutions and public space. I paint with pigments and caseine glue made from milk which stays very matt. This paint is already in use for millenia but also Warhol painted his first Campbell cans with it. My work is based on folk art and ornamental traditions and puts a question mark at contemporary art’s focus on the autonomie of artists and artworks. Murals are a background for life. I like to work in commission and in colors that match well with the curtains.»
